Flourishing Young Leaders Award (FYLA)

The Flourishing Young Leaders Award (FYLA) programme is designed to empower children and young people as leaders, enabling them to influence change and make a difference in spaces they care about.

Who is it for?

The FYLA is available to any schools or trusts who are accessing the NSE’s Flourishing Leaders or Teachers courses. It supports schools to embed leadership development within a whole‑school approach to flourishing.

FYLA resources are adaptable for KS2 and KS3 pupils.

Why the FYLA?

The FYLA programme supports schools to:

  • Strengthen pupil leadership through the lens of flourishing

  • Connect personal development & practical opportunities for leadership

  • Equip pupils to analyse, debate, challenge and create

  • Empower pupils to lead and influence in areas they care about

  • Invite pupils to join the flourishing journey

What’s involved?

The programme is shaped around five domains of flourishing:

  • Purpose

  • Relationships

  • Learning

  • Resources

  • Wellbeing

Curriculum content is designed to ignite pupils’ curiosity, encourage them to ask meaningful questions and to explore real-world problems. Pupils will have opportunities to reflect on what each of these ‘shoots of flourishing’ means for themselves, their school and their world.

Alongside this there will be additional resources exploring a choice of areas or spaces where young people can influence and lead.

Pupils will choose from:

  • Our digital world

  • Our local environment

  • Our healthy lives

They will have practical opportunities to lead and influence others, making a difference beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
